What it does

Make the calculation clear.

Enter revenue, direct cost of sales, and operating expenses. The calculator separates gross profit from net profit and shows the resulting net profit margin.

Why it is useful

It gives you a quick view of whether sales are producing a healthy return after the costs of running the business.

Use the result well

The calculation is a starting point, not the whole decision.

Use accurate inputs, understand what the result means, and compare the estimate with what your business actually records.

How to use it

  1. 1Enter revenue for one consistent period, such as a week or month.
  2. 2Enter direct cost of sales for the same period, including stock, materials, or other costs directly tied to those sales.
  3. 3Enter operating expenses for the same period, such as rent, transport, subscriptions, admin, and marketing.
  4. 4Review net profit and margin, then compare them with previous periods and the records behind the totals.

Worked example

If monthly revenue is NGN 1,000,000, direct cost of sales is NGN 550,000, and operating expenses are NGN 300,000, gross profit is NGN 450,000 and net profit is NGN 150,000. The net profit margin is 15%.

Gross profit

Revenue minus direct cost of sales. It shows what remains before general operating expenses.

Net profit

Gross profit minus operating expenses. A negative result means the costs entered exceed revenue for the period.

Net profit margin

Net profit as a percentage of revenue. Use the same definitions each period if you want a useful trend.
