How to Register a Business Name in Nigeria

A business name registration gives a sole proprietor or partnership a formal registered trading identity with Nigeria’s Corporate Affairs Commission. It is not the same structure as a limited liability company, and it does not automatically answer every tax, permit, industry, or liability question.

Choose the structure based on the actual ownership, risk, customer, and growth needs of the business. If you have investors, several owners, regulated activities, significant liability exposure, or contractual requirements, professional advice may be appropriate before you decide on the structure.

CAC’s current official iCRP materials describe an online process that begins with name reservation and continues into business name registration from the user dashboard. The official portal is the place to create or access the account, reserve the name, submit proprietor and business details, upload required documents, pay through the supported payment flow, and download approved registration documents.

Avoid starting from a link sent by an unknown agent or social-media account. Find the CAC website or iCRP independently and confirm that the exact domain is official before entering personal information or paying.

Prepare more than one sensible name option before you begin. The name should fit the business, be easy to use consistently, and avoid restricted or misleading wording. Use the portal’s availability process to check and reserve the approved name.

The current iCRP flow provides an availability code after successful name reservation. Keep that code safely because it is used to continue the business name registration process.

Have the business email address, principal business address, date of commencement, nature of business, and proprietor information ready. Use consistent spelling for names and addresses across the application and supporting identification.

CAC’s current iCRP guidance for business name registration lists proprietor identification, passport photograph, and signature among the documents uploaded in the registration flow. Check the portal for the current accepted formats and any additional requirements before submission.

Use the preview step to check names, dates, addresses, business activity, and uploaded files. A small spelling mistake can later create inconsistency between the certificate, bank account, invoices, supplier records, and customer documents.

If something is wrong, correct it before submitting where the portal allows. Keep a copy or screenshot of the final information for your own records.

Use the payment method presented inside the verified CAC workflow. Do not send a filing fee to a personal bank account because someone claims it will speed up the process.

After submission, monitor the application status on the dashboard. If the application is queried, read the query carefully, correct the relevant information, and resubmit through the portal rather than starting a second conflicting application.

When the registration is approved, download the electronic certificate and the other registration record made available through the official portal. Store a protected copy outside the phone you use every day so a lost device does not erase the only copy.

Use the same registered business name consistently when it is appropriate on business documents, bank or payment onboarding, vendor forms, and customer-facing records.

After registration, check the tax, annual return, local permit, signage, premises, and sector requirements that apply to your actual activity. Requirements differ between businesses and can change over time.

Keep the business contact details and official records current. If the business changes address, proprietor information, or other registered particulars, check the current CAC post-registration process rather than leaving the official record outdated.

Be cautious with anyone who guarantees approval, asks for account passwords or one-time codes, requests payment to an unrelated personal account, or tells you not to use the official portal. An agent can provide a legitimate service, but you should still understand what is being submitted in your name.

Never give another person your banking PIN, authentication code, or other security credential simply because they are helping with registration.
