This is a planning calculation, not accounting, tax, legal, or financial advice. Use accurate current inputs and review the result against your real business records.

What it does

Make the calculation clear.

Enter the true cost of one product or service and the markup percentage you want to add. The calculator converts markup on cost into a selling price, money profit, and equivalent profit margin.

Why it is useful

It helps you apply markup consistently and understand the relationship between cost, price, and profit.

Use the result well

The calculation is a starting point, not the whole decision.

Use accurate inputs, understand what the result means, and compare the estimate with what your business actually records.

How to use it

  1. 1Enter the full cost per item or standard service, including the costs you want the markup to cover.
  2. 2Enter the markup percentage as a percentage of cost, not of selling price.
  3. 3Review the resulting selling price and equivalent margin so you can see the difference between markup and margin.
  4. 4Check whether the resulting price still covers overhead not included in cost and fits the actual customer offer.

Worked example

If the true cost is NGN 10,000 and you add a 50% markup, the selling price is NGN 15,000 and money profit is NGN 5,000. The equivalent profit margin is about 33.3%, not 50%.

Selling price

Cost plus the selected markup percentage. It is the price before any extra tax, discount, or cost you did not include.

Profit per sale

The money difference between selling price and the cost entered.

Equivalent margin

The same profit expressed as a percentage of selling price. It will be lower than the markup percentage when both are positive.

Calculate → act → understand

Put the price into a record you can reuse.

Use the result as a planning check, then update the product or service in your Catalogue so the price can flow into quotations and invoices.
